Search Our Library Collection -If you would like to check and see if our library has the book you are looking for, simply click the link above.

Research Database - Deer Valley Unified School District is providing each student with an incredible research tool, free access to research databases. We want students to realize that academic research goes far beyond simply "Googling" something.

Students check out books for two weeks at a time.
Our system sends out an email letting parents/guardians and students know that the book is late and what the cost to replace it is, if it is lost/damaged.
Receiving that email does not mean there is a fine, only if the book is lost/damaged. As soon as students turn in or renew their book, that alert is taken off.
Students may ask teachers for a library pass to come to the library, if they would like to come outside of their class library time.
The library opens at 8:30am for students and closes at 3:45pm.
Students can come to the library before or after school with out a pass.
Students can utilize the book drop slot if the library is closed at anytime to return books.

Battle of the Books

2024-2025 BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

12th Annual DVEF BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

The Deer Valley Education Foundation (DVEF) will sponsor the 2024-25 Battle of the Books for Deer Valley School District students. The reading incentive program is open to students in fifth and sixth grades. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are a lively academic competition. Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Fifth and sixth grade students will be teamed in groups of three (with a maximum of 20 teams per school) to compete and test their knowledge in three exciting school competitions during the 2024-2025 school year. There will be three rounds held in October 2024, January/February 2025 and March 2025. Each round has 4 books for students to read and teams earn points based on correctly answering questions about each round's books. The top team from each school will compete in a District Battle in April/May 2025, with the top team representing our District at an inter-district battle in May 2025.

Types of Books

Types of Books
The West Wing Library Media Center contains thousands of books! Finding what you need is easy if you know how to use the LMC.

Types of Books
Non-fiction: books that are about real things - animals, countries, space, etc.
Biographies are located in 921 by the subject's last name - Abraham Lincoln would be found in 921 LIN
Fiction: stories are made up by the author
Everybody: Picture books contain context appropriate for all ages.
Everybody non-fiction: generally, non-fiction books for grades K-3
Beginning Chapter: fiction books for grades 1-3

Every book in the LMC will have a spine label located on the book's spine, easily visible when on the shelf. It contains the book's call number. This is the book's "address." This address will identify to the reader what type of book it is and where on the shelf it belongs relative to the other books. Using a shelf marker is very important to keep books shelved properly so that other students may find them.

Electronic Books: West Wing carries "E books" which can be read online anytime. A login (wws) and a password (guest) are needed to enter our E book collection. There is no need for "checking out" these types of books. When you are finished you simply click on the book icon that says "close" in the upper left hand corner of the screen to close the book. If the book is closed any other way the book will be inaccessible for 15 minutes. Some of our books are "infinite user" and are designated with the lazy 8 (infinity sign). These books can be read by an unlimited amount of users at the same time.

Non-fiction Organization
Non-fiction books are organized using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). This system was developed by Melvil Dewey, one the greatest librarians of all time. He used 10 numerical categories to organize books by their subject matter. While the number identifies the category, the first 3 letters of the author's last name are also used for further classification.

Welcome to Italy by Nicole Frank - 945 FRA
The Solar System by Paul P. Sipeira - E 523.2 SIP (Everybody Non-fiction)
1000 Years of Famous People - REF 920 (Reference)

Fiction Organization
Fiction is organized by using the first 3 letters of the author's last name.

Examples:
The Giver by Lois Lowry - FIC LOW (Fiction)
The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett - E BRE (Everybody)
Afternoon in the Amazon by Mary Pope Osborne - BC OSB (Beginning Chapter)

Shelved Books

Shelved Books
It is very important to shelve books correctly. Some important things to remember:

The spine of the book should always be facing out so that the call number is visible and readable. Occasionally, a book is too tall to fit on the shelf properly. In this case, the spine should face up and out toward the reader. Shelf markers help to hold a book's place when the book is removed for review. Replacing the shelf marker with the book ensures that the book was returned to its proper place for the next patron. Call numbers for non-fiction books begin with numbers, followed by the first 3 letters of the author's last name. For example: Harriet Tubman 921 TUB. Nonfiction books are shelved in numerical order.

Fiction books have call numbers that contain letters, using the first 3 letters of an author's last name.

For example: The Giver by Lois Lowry - FIC LOW.

Everybody books contain two sections - picture books and non-fiction. The call numbers for both types of Everybody books are the same as fiction and non-fiction, except they will both start with "E".

Example for Everybody fiction: Arnie the Doughnut by Laurie Keller- E KEL

Example for Everybody non-fiction: Mud City A Flamingo Story by Branda Z. Guiberson - E 598.35 GUI

Beginning Chapter books have call numbers like Fiction, except they begin with BC

Example: Geronimo's Valentine by G. Stilton - BC STI

Library Resources

Using the West Wing Library Media Center

Getting around the LMC is easy if you know how to use it! First, you should know your way around the LMC. Our library has 7 sections and they are:

Fiction section

Non fiction section

YA Young Adult (7th and 8th graders only. Notice the pink dots on the books)

Everybody

Everybody non fiction (notice the red dots on the books)

Beginning Chapter (notice the green dots on the books)

Reference

All books are arranged on shelves in very specific ways, so it’s important to understand book types to find the book you need. It’s also very important that you keep the books properly shelved. Students are encouraged to use a Shelf marker while visiting the shelves. This helps everyone find what they need by keeping books in the correct order.

Remember, the more you use the LMC, the easier it will become to find things on your own. So come in regularly!
