National Junior Honors Society (NJHS)

The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization that recognizes outstanding middle school students. More than a mere honor roll, NJHS honors those students who have demonstrated excellence in their social, academic and community involvement. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1929. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NJHS and its high school counterpart, the National Honor Society (NHS).

Five main purposes outlined in the NJHS constitution have guided chapters from the beginning: “To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop worthy school and community citizenship and to develop character in the students of secondary schools”.

If you are interested in applying for the membership in the West Wing Chapter of NJHS, please review the following expectations carefully. Selection to be a part of the National Junior Honor Society will be done through an application process. A panel of teachers will review your application based on the following criteria:
Scholarship – Students are to currently have a 3.5 GPA – if you do have any C’s, they would need to be offset by A’s. (GPA is figured on a 4 point scale not %).

Below are the  Five Pillars of NJHS , which membership is based on:

  • Scholarship
Per national guidelines, at a minimum, students must have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence. (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA.)
  • Service
This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.
  • Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
  • Character
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.
  • Citizenship
The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice; respects the U.S. form of government; respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels; and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in activities such as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs.
